Dance Of The Gods- A Fusion Of Artistic Styles
General product information
The Kuchipudi is an ancient dance form dating back to the 13th century A.D. Popularised by the travelling bards or bagavathalu, the rhythm and life of the dance captivated the connoisseur king of mighty Vijayanagar, under whose patronage the artists flourished and carried their art to other neighbouring kingdoms as well. From its humble beginnings as a folk dance, Kuchipudi has in grown in popularity to hold a place of honour among the most practiced classical dances of India. The famed Kuchipudi style of dance originally from AndhraPradesh finds expression in this canvas. The vibrantly colourful attire and sparkling jewellery of the dancer light up the entire painting with their alluring brightness. This splash of colours is set off against the graphic image of Nataraja -The Lord of Dance, in the background. Engaged in the cosmic dance, Lord Shiva- the supreme ascetic, is depicted in single tone copper/ gold unmixed colouring thus presenting a stunning contrast to the riot of colours that represent the life and spirit of the danseuse.
The fusion of graphic single tone imagery with the lively, colorful rendition of the smiling danseuse combine to give the illusion of the Lord Nataraja himself finding expression through the dancer, thus highlighting the oneness of God and his Creation. The distinctive colours and bold strokes of oil on canvas bestow an early Impressionist veneer on the painting and contribute to overall effect of unification of the deity and the dancer through the divine dance.
